Pramila Bajracharya
Pramila takes cityscape as her subject matter but she adds vigor and vitality to provide renewed experience to the viewers. The ancient city gives the sense of protection and comfort as if the viewer wants to enter it and be nestled within it. Red bricks, sloping roofs and wooden tundal, pillars and windows feel nearer to us. The colours and shapes are altered to create the distinct form. The colours and forms speak more than the subject matter and the contents.
Though the artist has taken inspiration from the ancient towns of Kathmandu valley, She adds more from her own imagination. Her concern is not to represent the objects as they are but to express the feeling and her sense of colour. She creates the landscapes of her own mind. How the combination of colour affects is more important than what they mean.
The placing of the houses, and the colours of the walls, windows, road and sky all altered and unconventional. As every art presents its own world, Pramila’s landscapes also create new image in new colours that provide new experience.
Pramila’s landscapes have taken on brooding tone possibly influenced by the turbulent times through which Nepal is passing. The sudden introduction of intensive red patches here on the road and there on the roof and wall surprises the viewers. Perhaps, she uses with purpose. The red here symbolizes the violence and tragedy that is going on in country and town. Her landscapes generally lack the human figures.
In some of her works, she plays between landscape and abstract form. At first glance, the colour composition appears to be abstract but closer view reveals a mystic dream landscape with images of temples and ancient architecture. Sometimes, the narrow streets of Kathmandu valley come forth in the foreground. Specially, she captures a panorama of the images of nature and architecture with distant effect having hazy and foggy shapes and colours. Such scenes perhaps one can view early in the morning and after the rain.
In addition to the landscapes, recently she has executed some portraits that depict her loneliness and sense of loss. The invisible darkness, disillusionment and violence overwhelm the female character’s feelings. The introvert figures sometimes bring out their nostalgia of the pleasant past. Despite the looming danger and suffering, the figures in distinct contour and bold colours suggest the enduring capacity of the character. The sure and assertive strokes imply the artist’s energy that can tackle the adverse situation. The use of altered colours to present the facial features depicts the irony in appearance and reality. Despite the same external appearance, the characters may have a number of inner feelings and experiences from hopeful and enthusiastic to lonely and tragic. The elongated protrude single eye is her distinct signature regarding her female figure. But no one knows for sure why she creates such an eye. However, one can always conjecture about it. In addition to the female figures, the quaint landscape in the background is equally meaningful. The exotic and dream-like trees with a few cactus, clouds and hills transfer the viewers in the unacquainted world. The cactus brings a chain of associations. The thorns and desert connote to the darker side of the experience. The unusual and bizarre shapes and images, as the things hanging in the primitive caves, appear and disappear as the colours run ahead. Using dazzling and alluring colours, the artist seeks to explore her passion and mood.
