Sangee Shrestha
Sangee Shrestha’s paintings break the linear surface of the things with the use of geometric shapes particularly the rectangles, squares and polygons suggesting the depth and fourth dimension. She attempts to dig out the invisible corners of human expressions. Furthermore by breaking the natural order with geometric shapes, she implies mechanization and fragmentation of contemporary world. The breaks and rifts also suggest the lack of communication. The background is suffused with the composition of soft colours resembling mist, fog, ocean, blue sky or the colours of sunset and sunrise whereas intricate nexus of geometrical shapes are projected in the foreground. The colour rectangles and the lines remind us of Piet Mondrian, and some of the colour fills echo to Mark Roathko.

Sangee’s works satirize the human hypocrisy and give stress to the value of inner feelings like love, hate, joy and jealousy. To assume the mask of supremacy and fake personality, one hides the true emotions but actually that leads nowhere. Likewise, she denounces the lust of so called leaders for powerful political chair. She aims her critique particularly to the women activists who become oblivious to the promise they have made as they ascend to the chair, and the domination and oppression goes on as usual. She presents such critiques of the contemporary society through her installation works.
Sangee’s works are also the visual commentary on the concept of freedom which is so uncertain and contingent. It appears and disappears in no time. Because of the self centered attitude of the people, the same situation is defined sometimes as having freedom and sometimes lack of it. She expresses such view exploiting canvas, colour, electric cables and barbed wire.
Some of her works depict misanthropic attitude, that is, humans have innate power for evil. Their external beauty of behavior, face and attire is fake and pretentious. The ugliness, dishonesty and corruption reveal as the time goes on. She depicts this concept with distorted masks. She always explores and analyzes the invisible dark sides of human condition. Sangee exploits multiple genres of art like painting, sculpture and installation by blurring the boundary between them.
